Jenson acted as Master of the French Royal Mint at Tours and is credited with being the creator of one of the finest early Roman typefaces. Nicolas Jenson was born in Sommevoire, in northeastern France, probably in the 1430s. Although little is known of his life before he started printing in Venice, historians seem certain he had had previous experience in fine metalworking and he is thought to have been the director of the mint in Tours.
